The game was held up in the last quarter due to an injury to a Mirfield player which required an ambulance to attend. Our best wishes to the player wishing him a full and speedy recovery
As for the match itself this was not a vintage performance but the 17 players showed their character digging deep to overcome a 20:12 deficit going into the last few minutes.
RNRL were first to score with a converted try, prop David Brown crashing over left of the posts following a great build up from Eden Quantock then onto Rhys Joel before Brown took the ball over through the defence, Joel slotting over the 2 pointer, 0:6. The brothers held the advantage going into the 2nd quarter before the home side turned the game around. Posting a brace of trys and with one converted Mirfield took a 10:6 lead into the half time break.
The home side picked up where they left off in the second half, another unconverted try on 50 minutes gave them a bit of breathing space, but would the missed conversions prove costly for the home side? 14:6. The Brothers responded in the best possible way, playing down the slope a converted try brought them within 2 points of the home side. Ben Conner broke the Mirfield defence heading for the line but desperate home defence held him up short. From the play the ball a crossfield move found Rhys Joel who cut inside to touchdown, the scrum half made it a 6 pointer with his conversion and the Brothers were back in the game 14:12. With the game heading for the last quarter play was held up to treat a Mirfield injury, Ambulance support was called to ensure the lad received the appropriate care before the game restarted. The game was restarted with 18 minutes to go with the home side leading by 2. This did not last long, an interception by the Mirfield scrum half extended their lead and with the conversion being made Mirfield were now up by 8 at 20:12. The Brothers dug deep again especially the pack who secured the next score, David Brown took the ball up to the Mirfield line only to be held up by no less than 6 home defenders, local Mirfield boy Elliott Richardson then took the ball on but again was held up by desperate defence. Hooker James Tilley took the ball from the restart and sent out a high pass to prop Johnny Stoppard who took the ball cleanly spinning in the tackle to fall over the line for the score, once more Joel converted 20:18. It got even worse for Mirfield as they saw one of their number shown red reducing them to 12 for the remainder. Back came the Brothers, Matt Holland cutting through the midfield defence before being brought down by a high tackle earning his side a penalty from the 30-metre line, Rhys Joel once again nailing the crucial score to tie the game at 20:20. The brothers sensed the win was on and spurning a potential drop goal attempt sent the ball out wide to Joey Sugden who brought his side within sight of the line. The play came infield from the play the ball to prop Brown who looked to have been brought down but got the pass away to loose forward Jack Ray who made the last couple of metres to touch down and put his side ahead. Joel was once again on target so for the first time in an hour the Brothers had the lead. 20:26
That was to be the final score and the Brothers advance to the challenge of a 2nd round tie at Burnaby Road against Workington Town.
