Dewsbury Moor Ladies v Royal Navy Ladies

Coach Matt Bayliss reflects on a tough day for his charges as they travelled to West Yorkshire to take on Dewsbury Moor Ladies

A hard day in the heat found the Wrenegades on the harsh end of a 52-0 loss to a very well organised and well drilled Dewsbury Moor Ladies outfit

With a combined 14 days in camp since last September the players adapted to new structures, with a lot learnt in that time frame, sadly without the chance to implement their abilities and play to its full potential. With only 13 players available, it was evident from the off the cards were stacked against us, but from that, each and every player dug deep to complete the 80 with all players on the field, the result evidently didn’t go our way, but the attitude and energy was something to be extremely proud of.

Senior players leading from the front and putting their bodies on the line invited the new players into the squad to follow suit, running hard and defending even harder. With the result not going how we planned or envisaged, I think each player in the 13 came away learning and knowing not only more about themselves but each other and understanding that no matter the circumstance they’re all ready to go side by side in to the battles together. That in itself will prove to be a big factor moving into Septembers IS series. Special mentions going to player of the match, S/Lt Rosie Staples who led from the front and found herself in almost every position on the pitch, pushing the team forward in every way she could. Also 17 year old AB Amie Jones who played her full competitive debut against a team it would have been easy to shy and hide away from, instead she took the chance head on and has every reason to be proud of her performance in the WRNRL jersey.

Next up for the Wrenegades is the opening Inter Services clash against the RAF Women on 13th September at Burnaby Road, full details to follow.
